The Overdraught Pub
A Pub by any other name...
It is also affectionately known as Carol's pub.... or rather, it used to be called Carol's pub until the globe went and the ladder couldn't reach... now it's become known as 'Carol's by candle light.' Since the birth of her first grandson, Matt, the pub has also been known amongst a few locals as Granny Smith's. :-)
Moment of fame
The Overdraught has known it's moment of glory when it was secretly frequented in the dead of night, by Nicholas Cage during the filming of Lord of war.
History
The room & furniture's hisrory is about as interesting as those who visit it. According to Ray Gregory, the bar counter (an old carpenter's bench) came out of the old cobler-cum-carpenter-cum-something-or-other-else's shop, where the Temenos office is now. A Swedish guest who was in South Africa researching the Scandinavian influence here, remarked that the top may originally have been the tray of a Swedish manufactured ox wagon.
In years gone by, the room itself was an add-on kitchen to the original 'nagmaalhuis' when the son or daughter got married. The added semi then became the 'nagmaalhuis' of the newly wed couple. Here, in the bar room is where the children from the new marriage would sleep warm and cosy in the kitchen in front of the wood burning stove.
Today
According to a few salted travellers, it
is certainly the smallest pub in South Africa. It also has the biggest
heart and accommodates a few large and colourful personalities.
As cheesy as the 'arrive as strangers, leave as friends' schplurb has
become over the years, here it has actually found itself a cosy and
relevant little niche. A place where everyone knows your name, it's
the spot to join if you want to meet a few locals.
On Offer:
Although you won't find any draught beer here, we do pride ourselves on always offering wines from the village. We firmly believe that local is lekker & even though we may not have a huge selection, we do try to cover them all as far as possible. The winemakers, some of the staff & the farmers who produce the grapes for the following cellars, all enjoy regularly popping into the bar - especially on Friday nights after a hard week on the job. These include McGregor Winery, Lords Winery and a few others like Buffalo Creek & Wolfdoring Wines, who regrettably don't have their own websites yet. So, if you are interested in wine, pop in & meet a few fellow aficionados.
