Every last Saturday of the month, during summer, a young, but jolly tradition is enjoyed on the front stoep of the establishment.  Locals and visitors alike, pitch like clockwork for their monthly sushi-and-or-steak-roll-fix.  Whilst enjoying the company and tunes from Ray's little red beetle, you can watch the world go by, have a drink and chill.  When the stoep is full, the garden at the back offers country charm under shady pergolas.

In the kitchen, Carol and a helper or two always conjure up a very delicious storm on that day. Lekker sushi with a McGregor twist, is freshly made at sparrow’s on the day.  The steak-rolls are also to die for, made from good quality, local beef steak on fresh, crusty bread.  It comes with tasty & interesting condiments and a salad or two.

As an esteemed friend and regular guest recently remarked:  Carol does fast food slowly! :-)

How it works

Due to the fact that the kitchen is always crazy busy on the day, it is NOT advisable to bug the cooks, so do be sure to steer well clear of them...

We do not do "special."  Seriously.  The closest to "special" that we do do, is vegetarian sushi, which can be ordered at the bar, like everything else.  If you have a question or need anything, you can also check in at the bar.  There, you'll get service with a smile. :-)

Do inform us in good time if you prefer your meat charred to coal, as it is served medium rare otherwise. :-)

One of the temporary staff will eventually get round to your table.  If this idea doesn't float your boat, please report to & order your meal at the bar upon arrival. You'll probably be served faster and get your dop straight away. :-)  Depending on the flavour of the month, you may or may not encounter Elcke, or one of a host of other locals busking here on the day.  Elcke is the lady with the money bag, so you can pay her.  Because of the fact that the staff are local and work on the dopstelsel**, you should please not rush them. :-) You will soon discover that in McGregor, everything happens eventually.  A lovely, chilled-out afternoon is guaranteed and albeit slightly off-beat, you won't ever forget it!

Carol does not pretend to run a steakhouse or restaurant by any means, so you are welcome to get coffee, cake or anything else you'd like, from across the street at the Frangipani, to enjoy on our stoep if you so please. We have a very good relationship & cross pollination of lunch is a common occurrence.  As with all things in life, however, basic manners prevail. Taking our lunch across for the sake of enjoying a cup of coffee afterwards and in the process blocking their lunch time diners, is obviously rude and will ruffle a feather or two.  We don’t want that. We're all big kids, so let's play nicely. :-)

Almost everything and anything goes in McGregor, but to be safe, perhaps just run any creative ideas you may feel like hatching past aforementioned staff before executing them.  That way everyone stays happy & relatively sane.  :-)

Bringing your pets and kids can be approached  in the same manner.  Leaving either unattended, or off their leashes, will probably result in a request to ‘please go put them in the car.’  With the windows open, obviously.  We are all here to enjoy ourselves and therefore regard for everyone's property, peace, enjoyment and nerves, is highly valued.

It is advisable to bring lots of time, a sense of fun & some actual cash along.  We don’t have a machine.  Food can sometimes take a while, but think about it this way: it will give you enough time to really enjoy your wine for a change.  So, if you feel that you have the capacity & inclination to share in a slightly different lunch experience where lip-smacking-country-tucker is homemade, where you cannot complain about the service (because there is none) and that you will always remember, this day is for you.  See you there!
