Welcome!
McGregor
Country House is located more or less in the centre of the village, making it within walking distance of most amenities. Owner
& hostess, Carol Smith, will welcome you to this lovely establishment. We most certainly offer the best value in town and you are welcome to contact us for very reasonable, current rates.
The guesthouse has always been known as 'home away from home' for many a tired globe trotter and city dweller. The easygoing, laidback atmosphere is what most guests expect in a place as tranquil as McGregor. Make yourself comfortable in one of the en-suite bedrooms, with its crisp white linen and old world charm. Each room is equipped with tea and coffee making facilities and a ceiling fan. In winter, the wall mounted panel heaters will help keep you snug. One of the three rooms is equipped for self catering.
The lounge is
where you can chill out & watch the game on DSTV, or whatever else you feel
like.
We also have a
nice little pool, where you can have fun in the
sun... It is set in a lovely, rambling country garden, amongst a terrace
or two. Here, you can lounge around
reading, or just lay about, sipping on something cool. You can even assemble your own picnic lunch from our local deli, the olive shop, or even our Saturday morning market.
The pub is small, but indeed very interesting. Even
though the atmosphere has a reputation for spontaneous combustion in the most
festive sense, guests' needs are always taken into account.
On every last
Saturday of the month, during the summer months, Carol serves the most
delicious sushi and steak rolls on the stoep.
Locals and visitors gather from far and wide to enjoy this monthly
treat. The atmosphere is hearty and the country fare is divine!
From time-to-time there might be the odd exception as to whether or not the
event will take place, so just be sure to confirm that it is indeed
happening, should you feel like sharing in the good vibes. A bit of history
The building, erected in the late 1800's, used to serve as lodgings for a
wealthy, local farming family on their slightly more extended trips into
town. The main event that justified a lengthy
stay (at least two nights), would have been the monthly 'Nagmaal' or 'Holy Communion'
service at the local NG Kerk. Hence, these town houses became known as
'Nagmaalhuise' or 'Communion houses.' Of course, there were also the odd
wedding and other festivities that needed more than just an afternoon's stay in
the village.
Upon arrival, you may notice an interesting feature regarding the building’s
relation to the rest of the erf. It's close proximity to the street was
intended with a very specific purpose in mind. It was designed in this way to make
available as much as possible space at the back, in which to allow ox wagons to
be circumnavigated with ease. Today, of course, we have no need for such
expansive driveways, but are nonetheless very grateful for the amazing size
that it lends to the garden.
